ALL-NEW FIREFLY #1

When I came back to the comic book industry I missed ALL-NEW FIREFLY #1 locally. I read some of the other issues and eventually decided to purchase a copy of ALL-NEW FIREFLY #1 online from a retailer. It wound up costing me more than I believe it is worth. It also answered some of my questions. ALL-NEW FIREFLY #1 does not explain why Kaylee is captain. Mal is there and it was his ship at one point. Something happened in this fantasy universe that makes no sense to me. ALL-NEW FIREFLY #1 does not explain it. It feels weird seeing that dynamic. There will be spoilers in this review.

Jayne Cobb is the main focus of ALL-NEW FIREFLY #1. We start with a flashback to when he was a twelve year old kid. He stole for his sick sibling since the owner of the medicine was price gouging families. He had to go to church and pay some penance. I am not clear on what the penance is exactly. Jayne did steal so he was breaking the law, morals, and ethics. His justification does not really matter. There are plenty of greedy store owners that eventually get their due reward. ALL-NEW FIREFLY #1 then fast forwards to the present day where someone attacks Jayne and threatens his life.

Mal breaks Jayne out of jail since the Magistrate is related to the attacker. They get out of there without the supplies they need. Jayne heard about some moon called Requim. It is supposed to have a stash of goods, fuel, and other stuff that thieves have been using as a hiding spot. Why not steal from the thieves? That is the logic Jayne has in ALL-NEW FIREFLY #1. The crew and the ship get there but there is no leaving until they get fuel. They find a monastary in ALL-NEW FIREFLY #1. This connects to what I read after this issue and adds a bit of backstory.

The issues families can have with ALL-NEW FIREFLY #1 are stealing, blood, violence, language and more. The art in ALL-NEW FIREFLY #1 is odd. The colors feel wrong to me. The characters do not look like their real life counter parts to me in most cases. There are some new characters in ALL-NEW FIREFLY #1 that I am not very familiar with. I know where things go from here for a bit at least. I am wondering how they will evade capture since the authorities were hunting them in ALL-NEW FIREFLY #1. Will they have to face the music related to Jayne's actions?

ALL-NEW FIREFLY #1 does have some humor within it. I have always had a soft spot for Firefly and the Serenity movie. ALL-NEW FIREFLY #1 did not have very many clever lines like the show and movie. I could hear the actors voices as I read ALL-NEW FIREFLY #1. The cadence and what they say is spot on at the very least. I have a few more comic books in this series to read in my pile. I hope to read and review them in the upcoming months. I am still baffled how Mal lost the ship, Kaylee became captain, and Mal is crew. There are twenty-two pages of content with some advertisements at the end of ALL-NEW FIREFLY #1.
