Dune
SCORE: 68
I am very thankful I had the money to purchase a copy of Dune on DVD
during our Black Friday 2022 excursion. We are consistently going to
local retailers and helping out our local economy whenever we have the
funds to do so. This is a remake of the 1984 Dune movie. This review is
for the Dune movie from 2021. The special effects are way better close
to thirty years later. The shields on the characters fighting is very
interesting to me personally. There will be spoilers in this review.
The main themes of the story stay the same from what I recall. Dune
starts us off with House Harkonnen being forced to leave the planet
Arrakis. This is where the spice comes from. House Atreides is given
stewardship of the planet Arrakis. The emperor is the one who does these
things. Paul is the son of the Duke of House Atreides. When his father
dies he becomes the Duke of House Atreides. Paul is also getting better
at using his powers from his Bene Gesserit training. The Bene Gesserit
are actually mainly women who are pretty sexist.
The issues families can have with Dune are violence, blood, lack of
attire, and bad language. It takes 155 minutes to watch Dune from start
to finish. There are definitely some slow parts in Dune. Paul has all
kinds of visions in this movie. Many of them are of the future. Paul is
also someone that others believe has been prophesied about. Will he save
the Fremen? Will the Bene Gesserit's get what they want from Paul?
The part of Dune that makes no sense to me is the emperor takes that
planet from House Harkonnen to give it to House Atreides. Even though
House Harkonnen outnumbers House Atreides three to one the emperor then
sides with House Harkonnen to destroy House Atreides. Why? There is
obviously some context we are missing. Why take it from someone to then
immediately side with them even though they were stealing the spice and
skimming off the top?
I did enjoy parts of Dune. I know it will get better in the next part.
Paul is showing growth in his powers and that means very few can touch
him. He is challenged to battle and easily defeats a well trained
warrior of the Fremen. Paul also stares down a worm at one point. The
dragonfly like ships are pretty neat in Dune. It is neat to see Dave
Bautista in Dune. I liked Jason Momoa in Dune. I liked most of the
casting in Dune.
