What If Dark Spider-Gwen #1

The cover of What If Dark Spider-Gwen #1 caught my eye. It shows Gwen Stacy crying with what looks like a dead Spider-Man. I heard of Spider-Gwen but did not know much about her. When I was younger I really like the What If franchise. I am not sure what the dark has to do with anything though. In my opinion What If Dark Spider-Gwen #1 is no darker than the original story in Marvel comics. There will be spoilers in this review of What If Dark Spider-Gwen #1.

What If Dark Spider-Gwen #1 starts with four pages done in the really old style of art. Spider-Man is fighting Green Goblin and Gwen Stacy is about to die. Spider-Man saves her life and winds up dying herself. Gwen pulls up the mask of the dead Spider-Man to find out it is her boyfriend Peter Parker. She decides she needs to become the hero with no training and no powers. The spider did not bite her so she is really weak in What If Dark Spider-Gwen #1. More on that later.

Gwen confides in Harry Osborn who helps her trap the Green Goblin. Gwen cannot bring herself to kill the Green Goblin. Instead she puts the gun down because of her weakness. Harry Osborn picks up the gun and shoots and kills the Green Goblin. He then finds out that his dad is the Green Goblin. Harry hates Gwen and blames her for the death of his father. The thing is Harry is the one that pulled the trigger. I am really perplexed by that. Maybe unmask the guy before shooting him?

There is some violence and lack of attire within What If Dark Spider-Gwen #1. The Storm Breakers page in What If Dark Spider-Gwen #1 is all about Chris Allen and the Black Panther. Ads can be found all throughout What If Dark Spider-Gwen #1. There are thirty-four pages of content within What If Dark Spider-Gwen #1. Again the first four pages are done in a really old style. I am so glad that old style is not used in all of What If Dark Spider-Gwen #1.

Harry Osborn becomes the Green Goblin and Gwen becomes Spider-Gwen. I guess she learns on the job. There is no talk of power or responsiblity within What If Dark Spider-Gwen #1. Gwen decides not to kill the first Green Goblin because of what Peter Parker stood for. There is an interesting scene within What If Dark Spider-Gwen #1 where Gwen shares with Harry that Peter was Spider-Man. Neither of them had the beginning of a clue on that aspect of Peter's life.
