Encanto

Since we are on three months of a free Disney+ account I decided to catch up on some of the movies we missed in recent years. Encanto is one of those movies. I know a lot of people are unhappy with Disney for their vicious attacks on morals, ethics, values, and the family. Encanto was one of the movies accused of those things, and of course the hateful DEI push Disney has made for years. There will be spoilers in my review of the Encanto movie.

Since we watched Encanto on Disney+ there were advertisements, lag, and glitches. I may need to get a physical copy at some point in the future. I am sure prices have dropped drastically. Encanto is about a family I am guessing somewhere in South America that was being hunted by armed men on horseback. I can guess there was a revolution or something going on. The father tries to stop the men, and the mother with three babies freaks out when he is killed. A candle has some magical power and it protects the family.

The house is literally alive in Encanto. It helps the family in a variety of ways like bringing chairs to the table for their meals. When each child reaches a certain age they go to this golden door and are given a power that helps the community. We have someone that can heal with food, a strong woman, one that can shape shift into other people, one can make weather, one can make flowers, etc.

Mirabel did not receive a gift from the house in Encanto. All of her family has one, but not her. Mirabel also notices cracks in the house. She seeks Bruno because there was a vision about her. The house is destroyed or just fine depending on how you look at it in this green gem like thing. Mirabel sees that she needs to hug her sister to save the house. She does so but the grandmother loses it and the house breaks apart and collapses.

The grandmother in Encanto was the original woman with three children that watched her husband die. According to Encanto she was holding on too tight, and expecting too much of her family. The villagers help rebuild the house in Encanto. Mirabel puts the golden door handle back on, and brings back everyone’s powers and the house is alive again. Was Mirabel’s power the one to revive the magic? Did Mirabel hold the magic and was able to return it?

Ultimately I am not clear on what Mirabel’s power was. Could she amplify the powers of others? Technically amplify, change, or decrease the powers of others since all of those things happened. The powers in Encanto are also tied to emotional states. There is a bit of violence, blood, and peril within Encanto. There are some interesting musical numbers sung in Encanto as well.
