Hercules
SCORE: 67
I am not sure how or why I missed Hercules from 1997. Since we have
three months of Disney+ for free I decided to watch and review some of
the movies that had been missed over the years. Hercules is one of those
movies. This is an animated film. I vaguely remember some controversy
surrounding this film back in the day. There will be spoilers in my
review of this Hercules movie.
The issues families can have with Hercules are violence, blood, gore,
lack of attire, enticement to lust, false gods, and more. Hercules is
done in sort of a New York kind of style. The whole Greek theme is lost
in the music, dialogue, and attitudes of the characters. There are
plenty of city smart, cynical characters within Hercules. The gospel
like music did not resonate with me.
There is some humor within Hercules. Phil takes all kinds of abuse and
damage within Hercules. The storyline within Hercules is strange.
Hercules was born in Olympus as a full false god. Hades consults the
Fates on his future plans to conquer Olympus. They tell him he will
succeed as long as Hercules does not fight him. So Hades has his imps
kidnap Hercules as a baby, and give him some potion to make him mortal.
The key to this potion that makes Hercules mortal is he must drink every
drop. One drop is missed and Hercules retains his strength. A couple
finds the baby and brings him home. Hercules cannot go back to Olympus
because he is mortal. Hercules eventually finds out about his past and
goes to Zeus to find out he must become a true hero to gain back his
deity powers.
Hercules falls in love with Meg in this movie. She is actually working
for Hades, but falls in love with Hercules. Hades conquers Mount Olympus
by stealing Hercules powers for twenty-four hours. The deal gets broken
when Meg gets hurt. So Hercules goes and stops Hades. He then journeys
to the underworld to save Meg. Hercules is willing to give up his own
life to save Meg. That makes him a true hero.
