Wonka
SCORE: 80
On a recent movie night Yolanda and I watched Wonka on DVD. I am
thankful I had the money to purchase a copy of this movie. I was curious
about this prequel to Charlie and the Chocolate Factory. I did some
research and found that Wonka is not actually a prequel but a
reimagining of the characters. There are numerous differences between
the books, and this movie. There are also differences between the
previous movie and this one. Which makes me sad. There will be spoilers
in this review.
The issues families can have with Wonka are violence, bad language,
magic, and more. There is plenty of humor within Wonka. There are
different characters with far different goals. Willy cannot read in
Wonka. He does not check the small print to a contract and winds up in
indentured servitude to this lady at an inn. Willy keeps trying to sell
his chocolate concoctions to the people in Wonka.
The three main chocolate stores in this city work together to bribe the
chief of police to harass Willy in this movie. The chief of police keeps
getting larger and larger as he eats more and more of the chocolate in
Wonka. Willy comes up with automation to take care of the laundry jobs
the people enslaved to the lady of the inn. Wonka has a real theme about
the rich sticking it to the poor.
The other people in this inn help Willy sneak out, sell chocolate, and
evade the police. Wonka is a musical with numerous songs in it. There
are also some dance numbers in this movie as well. Willy learns the
secret from his mother about sharing the chocolate with others. That is
what matters in Wonka. The chocolate flowers are neat in Wonka. Mr. Bean
is pretty good in Wonka.
There is a lot of charm in Wonka. At times I felt like Wonka was
whimsical. At the end of the movie we finally see the chocolate factory
coming into being. The orange man with green hair is a very interesting
character in Wonka. The job he gets at the end of Wonka is fantastic.
Milking a giraffe is a little on the odd side in Wonka. I suppose I
should expect nothing less.
