Yars Revenge
SCORE: 59
Yars Revenge is very similar to Yars Return.
Yars Revenge was the first game and came
out on the Atari 2600 in May of 1982. Yars Revenge is more limited than
Yars Return is in a lot of ways. The game play elements are very similar
though. Many of the visuals in the two video games look similar even
though they were released decades apart. If you liked one then you will
probably like the other one.
One major difference between Yars Revenge and Yars Return is the screen.
The enemy is on the far right in Yars Revenge. The enemy can be
surrounded by a wall in Yars Return. The static in Yars Revenge is on
the left middle side going from top to bottom. In Yars Return the static
can be around the wall on all sides but the bottom. There can be more
shots coming after the player in Yars Return over Yars Revenge.
The static in both games is a neutral zone where the player cannot be
hurt or shoot. I also learned while playing Yars Revenge that players
can shoot the wall and chip away by running into it. The Qotile is the
enemy we are trying to destroy in Yars Revenge. We must chip away the
wall, and then go on top of the Qotile to charge up our shot. Finally we
go to the other side of the neutral zone static and shoot the Qotile. Be
careful because you can run into that super charged shot and hurt
yourself too.
I have no idea why the way to play Yars Revenge is overly complex. Why
didn't anyone think of easier ways of doing things? If I had not the
done research in regards to Yars Revenge and Yars Return I would have
never figured out how to ever damage the Qotile. Let alone learn the
name of the Qotile. I never considered doing all of those things while
playing Yars Revenge or Yars Return.
I know that are fanboys of Yars Revenge and Yars Return. I am not one of
those. I did not enjoy my time with Yars Revenge. I am stuck on the
overly complex way this game has to be played. Who ever figured that out
in the first place? This is my biggest hang up with Yars Revenge. I do
not recall playing this game on the Atari 2600. Maybe I did and could
never figure out how to progress and gave up on it.
